DAYTONA BEACH -- Two brothers were arrested Thursday on drug trafficking charges after troopers stopped them on Interstate 95 for speeding and found three large bundles of cocaine and an assault rifle in their van, officials said.
Juan Victor Nava, 30, of Palm Bay and Jose Mario Nava, 28, of Melbourne were stopped by the Florida Highway Patrol in a construction zone at 11 a.m. in the southbound lane near the ramp to I-4. The older Nava was driving when the van was clocked at 74 mph in a 55 mph zone.
When Trooper Kurt Glaezner went to investigate, he learned the van had the wrong tag and took procedures to impound the vehicle, which included a full search, troopers said. It was then that he found three kilograms of cocaine and an AR-15 assault rifle in the van, along with ammunition, the FHP said.
Both men were charged with armed trafficking, trafficking cocaine, possession of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to sell. They were taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail and held without bail. The seized cocaine had a street value of $236,000, troopers said.
