The Florida Highway Patrol will get five new troopers next month in Southwest Florida, but it will still leave them short-handed, FHP officials said.
Three new troopers will start in Lee County on Aug. 13 making $36,000 a year, said FHP Capt. Eddie Johnson. Two others will begin patrolling Collier County at the same wage. The new employees are wrapping up their training this month.
These will make up a third of the 15 new troopers slated to begin in the 10-county Troop F.
"This will be filling vacancies, so there's already funding available in the budget," Johnson said.
Lee County still has four more trooper positions to fill, and Collier has three vacancies, Johnson said, but this is a start.
