Enforcement Targets Trucks

In a two-day, special operation planned to stop aggressive commercial truck driving, troopers issued more than 100 tickets to truck drivers in Polk County, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Trooper Larry Coggins said more than 800 tickets were issued in the six-county Tampa Bay district of which Polk is a part.

The project, dubbed "Operation Safe Ride," began Thursday and extended through Friday.

The Florida Highway Patrol initiated the project because of numerous complaints by the public about aggressive truck drivers, Coggins said.

In Polk County, 62 tickets were issued for speeding; two for aggressive driving; and 56 for tickets that include following too closely, careless driving and improper lane change.

This was the first such operation organized by the Florida Highway Patrol to specifically target commercial vehicles, such as semitrailers and tankers, Coggins said.
