Miramar trooper is a hero

TOP FHP HONORS FOR 2004

Sean Brammer has been a Florida Highway Patrol trooper for seven years, but he wasn't on the highway when he performed an act that brought him the honor of 2004 Trooper of the Year.

He was at church.

TEEN SLUMPED OVER

Brammer was attending a service on Oct. 19, 2003, at Saved by Grace Community Church, 3138 S. University Dr. in Miramar, when a 15-year-old boy slumped over on the chairs.

He went over to the teen, found a faint pulse and noticed that his breathing was shallow. When smelling salts failed to revive the teen and Brammer could not find a pulse, he started CPR, aided by a woman who was also at the church.

After the second cycle of CPR, the teen started breathing again. He was taken to the hospital and has since recovered. Further information on his condition was not available late Tuesday.

`HIGHEST TRADITION'

The news release announcing the award: ``Trooper Brammer acted in the highest tradition of the Florida Highway Patrol, demonstrating that he is a trooper whether he is on patrol or not -- he is always on the job!''

The award is presented every year to ''an outstanding trooper in recognition of acts of heroism or exceptional performance of duties,'' according to the FHP release.

Tuesday, Brammer met with Gov. Jeb Bush in Tallahassee. He attended a ceremony in Tampa on Friday.

''I was surprised. I was not expecting it all,'' Brammer said Tuesday night. ``I'm touched by it. I'm honored.''
