Winter Haven -Local motorists, be on the lookout in coming weeks.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers will be scouring all of Polk County's various highways during heavy driver license and vehicle inspection checkpoint enforcement periods, the agency announced this week.
During the coming week the FHP plans checkpoints at Lynchburg Road, Waverly Road, County Road 540A, Old Bartow-Eagle Lake Road, Thompson Nursery Road, Old Dixie Highway, State Road 33, Wabash Avenue, Crutchfield Road, County Road 17B and 17A, 91 Mine Road and State Road 572.
The checkpoints, FHP stated, "will concentrate efforts on vehicles being operated with defects such as bad brakes, worn tires and defective lighting equipment."
As always, however, attention will be directed to drivers violating the driver license laws of Florida, Lakeland FHP added.
"The Patrol has found these checkpoints to be an effective means of enforcing the equipment and driver license laws of Florida while ensuring the protection of all motorists," an official agency statement said.
The above roads will be enforced between the dates of April 21 and 27.
From April 28 to May 4, the patrol will add SR 659, CR 555, CR 542, Ewell Road, Reynolds Road, CR 540, Powerline Road, CR 17, SR 17, Mountain Lake Cut-off Road, SR 700, CR 630, CR 557A, CR54, CR 547 and Rockridge Road.
And from May 5 to May 11, FHP will be holding checkpoints at CR 546, SR 600, Maine Avenue, CR 655, CR 544A, Hinsen Avenue, Bates Road, Fish Hatchery Road, Marigold Avenue, E.F. Griffin Road, CR 555, Old Highway 37, CR 640 and Detour Road.
"These all started when vehicle inspections stopped," said Lt. Sterling King, spokesman for FHP in Tampa. "It helps us keep a lookout for DUIs, drivers without licenses and other offenders."
