FHP cites 77 local drivers during road rage crackdown

Florida Highway Patrol troopers reported Monday the results of a two-day push last week to reign in aggressive drivers throughout the state.

In Escambia and Santa Rosa counties on Thursday and Friday, troopers cited 70 drivers for speeding, five for driving under the influence and two for improper lane changes, said Lt. Tom Moore, patrol spokesman.

The effort netted 663 aggressive drivers statewide, Moore said.

Troopers cited a total of 4,748 drivers for speeding, 55 for driving under the influence, 264 for following too closely and 17 for reckless driving, Moore said.

In the initial push of "Operation Safe Ride," troopers used 1,500 marked cars, 300 unmarked cars, video cameras, radar and airplanes to track irresponsible drivers on all Florida interstates, Florida's Turnpike and other major state roads.

Local efforts focused on U.S. 90, U.S. 98 and Interstate 10, Moore said.
