Lieutenant Bill Leeper says Florida records its highest number of fatal crashes in March because of the huge influx of students on spring break.
As spring breaks is approaching and snowbirds are heading back north, Florida roads will be heavily congested in the next few weeks and the Florida Highway Patrol is going to take a corrective stance against aggressive drivers and speeders. FHP Public affairs officer Mike Burroughs says "Operation Safe Ride" went into effect early this morning and will continue until tomorrow.
Even though spring break in most universities in Florida won't officially begin until late next week, Burroughs says FHP is trying to send out an early message through word of mouth that they will not tolerate aggressive driving.
If violators receive an aggressive driving ticket the judge can enhance the fine up to $500. If a state trooper deems it necessary, drivers can also be taken to jail. He encourages drivers to safely dial star FHP on your cellphone if you see an aggressive driver on the road.
