Police Report:

St. Augustine

Driver charged with fleeing or attempting to elude: Florida Highway Patrol troopers pursued a road rage call on Interstate 95 about noon Wednesday, but the driver of the silver Oldsmobile did not stop, according to Trooper G.A. Cohn.

Troopers pulled in to stop the car, but the driver turned eastbound on State Road 207, Cohn said.

Troopers followed, he said, but were called off when the driver ran through a red light. Fifteen minutes later, Cohn spotted the car in a parking lot at Ponce de Leon Boulevard and S.R. 207. Two men walked into a restaurant and came out a few minutes later, he said. With his weapon out, Cohn approached the men.

The driver of the car, Robert Hamilton, 19, Daytona Beach, was charged with fleeing or attempting elude an officer, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. Bond will be set in first appearance Thursday morning, according to booking officials at the jail.

The passenger was let go, Cohn said.

FHP increasing patrols: Increased complaints of reckless driving on Florida's highways has prompted the Florida Highway Patrol to begin an initiative called "Operation Safe Ride," according to a release from the FHP.

Today and Friday, troopers will be using aircraft operations and marked and unmarked patrol cars to stop aggressive drivers in St. Johns County

The aircraft operation will watch motorists on Interstate 95 who are speeding, following too closely and changing lanes improperly.

Ten marked and unmarked patrol cars will also be seeking aggressive driving in northeast and north central Florida.
