(West Palm Beach-AP) -- A month-long crackdown on aggressive drivers in Palm Beach County has meant traffic tickets for 131 drivers.
During the crackdown that began January 23rd on Interstate-95, troopers wrote a total of more than 940 tickets. They included 468 for speeding. Three motorists were driving so recklessly, they were handcuffed and taken to jail.
For Operation Safe Ride, every available trooper will be on the road Thursday and Friday looking for drivers who are speeding, tailgating and weaving from lane to lane. Troopers say the program will be used periodically throughout the rest of the year, particularly during spring break and holiday periods.
But Boca Raton legislator Irving Slosberg says the real solution is hiring more troopers and paying them competitive salaries. He notes the F-H-P has 13 vacancies in its 79-member force in Palm Beach County alone.
