Troopers Nab 131 Aggressive Drivers

Troopers Write 940 Tickets

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A month-long crackdown on aggressive drivers in Palm Beach County has meant traffic tickets for 131 drivers.

During the crackdown that began Jan. 23 on Interstate 95, troopers wrote a total of more than 940 tickets. They included 468 for speeding. Three motorists were driving so recklessly, they were handcuffed and taken to jail, officials said.

For Operation Safe Ride, every available trooper will be on the road Thursday and Friday looking for drivers who are speeding, tailgating or weaving from lane to lane. Troopers said the program will be used periodically throughout the rest of the year, particularly during spring break and holiday periods.

Boca Raton legislator Irving Slosberg said the real solution is hiring more troopers and paying them competitive salaries. He noted the Florida Highway Patrol has 13 vacancies in its 79-member force in Palm Beach County alone.
