FHP: Florida Roads Safe for the Super Bowl

The roads and highways of Jacksonville will help thousands of people get from point 'A" to point "B" during Super Bowl week.

One of the many questions posed to the Florida Highway Patrol about Super Bowl crowds has been, how safe are the roads and highways? And, will they be able to handle the overload?

No area of Jacksonville will feel the security pinch more so than the roads surrounding ALLTEL Stadium. The Highway Patrol has planned to have three layers of cement barriers extending around parts of the stadium, which figures to create quite a traffic mess in parts of downtown Jacksonville.

Florida Highway Patrol also expects traffic to swell on almost all Jacksonville highways, and has gathered extra troopers to compensate for the visiting masses. Cameras that have been installed to give authorities a bird's eye view of certain stretches of highway will allow police to keep a closer eye on bourgeoning traffic situations.

"We'll have the cameras in operation monitoring traffic," says Lt. Bill Leeper of the Florida Highway Patrol, "which helps us look at areas that may get congested, so we can respond a little bit quicker than we would normally."
