Driver of speeding car faces drug charges

The driver of a car speeding 24 mph over the limit ended up in jail Tuesday on drug charges after authorities said they found a pound of marijuana in a backpack on the side of the road.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper William Berger clocked a 1992 Ford Crown Victoria driving 94 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 75 near Paynes Prairie on Tuesday afternoon, according to the FHP report.

After Berger stopped the driver, Allen Jerome White, 30, at the Paynes Prairie rest area, another driver stopped and told authorities the driver had thrown a black backpack out of the car before being stopped.

Sgt. Dan Miller found a backpack with three quart-sized baggies containing a total of about 1 pound of marijuana, the report states. White, of Gainesville, had $2,464 in cash in his pocket. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and was booked into the Alachua County jail.

White told authorities he didn't know anything about the backpack, according to the FHP.
