Road fatalities up in Charlotte

Charlotte County drivers can control whether a record no one wants to break will be broken this year.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers have reported 35 fatalities on Charlotte County roads this year. There were more fatalities during the first six months of the year than in all of 2003.

Nineteen people died on Charlotte County roads in 2003.

By the end of June of this year, 22 motorists were killed, and the number continues to rise as the end of the year approaches.

With just a few weeks before Dec. 31, Charlotte County drivers have the power to prevent breaking the 2000 record of 39 road fatalities.

To combat further deaths, FHP officials announced statewide traffic enforcement plans for the holiday season.

Troopers will be watching for aggressive drivers, speeders, drunken drivers and those not wearing seat belts.

"The need for travelers to drive in a careful and prudent manner, to stay sober, awake and remain alert during this holiday season is imperative," said Col. Chris Knight.

In 2003, 18 people were killed statewide in 13 wrecks during the 48-hour Christmas holiday, and 25 were killed around New Year's.

To stay safe on the roads, FHP is urging residents to allow plenty of time for traveling in addition to these safety tips:

* Wear seat belts.

* Secure children properly.

* Take frequent breaks or rotate drivers during long trips.

* Keep a safe distance between vehicles.

* Don't speed.

* Use turn signals.

* Don't get distracted with cell phones, food, makeup, shaving or reading.

* Make sure all lights are functioning.

* Look out for motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

* Use lights when it's raining.

* Keep tempers at home. Don't aggravate others with gestures or words.

* And, don't drink and drive.

Motorists can report aggressive or drunken drivers by dialing *347 (*FHP) on cell phones. The call is free and drivers can remain anonymous.
