The Alachua County Sherrif's Office will be increasing its patrols along the interstate and major roads for the upcoming busy holiday weekends. Sherrif Steve Oelrich fears the number of road fatalities may double around this time as compared to last year. He adds the problem of unsafe driving just doesn't seem to be a big enough concern to the community.
The main cause of traffic deaths have been caused by speeding and not wearing seatbelts. Oelrich says the importance of safe driving cannot be reiterated enough.
There have been 51 people killed in traffic accidents this year.
If you plan on travelling on the roads this year to see friends and family over the holiday season, the Florida Highway patrol wants to make sure you get to your destination. Florida Highway Patrol Spokesperson Mike Burroghs says societal misbeliefs are the reasons behind the recent trend of dangerous driving.
FHP will also be enacting a statewide traffic enforcement plan for both the Christmas weekend that will start on Friday December 24th and end on Sunday December 26th. The plan will also extend through the New Year's weekend on Friday december 31 to Sunday January second. F-H-P will implement zero tolerance enforcement strategies, targeting aggressive and safety restraint violations. Burroghs believes that strength, not weakness is the best way to implement these policies.
