A Florida Highway Patrol trooper's routine traffic stop resulted in the arrests of two people suspected of conducting a "pigeon drop" scam in which an elderly Pensacola resident was the victim, authorities said Tuesday.
Capt. David Karasek, FHP district commander, was working overtime when he stopped a car for speeding, troopers said. He learned Willard Fenner, 23, of Fairfield, Ala., and Sharon Sanford, 44, of Birmingham, Ala., were taking a Pensacola woman to a local bank to withdraw a large amount of money.
When Karasek discovered Fenner and Sanford were wanted on theft charges in Alabama and Georgia, he arrested them. Additional charges are pending, troopers said.
