Early on August 27, 2010 . My Father in law was driving my 2003 Ford F-150 Pick up through your state. As he was passing a DOTD weigh station in Madison he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and went off the road and crashed.
Joseph V. Kirby Jr. Was spotted by Trooper Roderick heading east bound and was apparently speeding as he was unaware of him falling asleep. He tried to cross from the west bound lane to the east bound lane to stop my Father n Law, but was unsuccessful before the crash occurred.
One of the DOT officers witnessed the Ford leaving the road and contacted Florida State Troopers and Trooper Roderick approached the vehicle that he was about to stop.
The Kirby Family which includes Warren, Evie Abbott, Katherine Kirby, Joe V. Kirby III, Blake Kirby & Charles K. Abbott wish to commend the professional and speedy reaction that Trooper Roderick displayed in removing Mr. Joe Kirby and his wife Marguerite Kirby from the vehicle and having them transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Trooper Roderick was performing his duties, but he also made the Kirby's comfortable until other help could arrive to remove the occupants which were pinned inside the truck.
Troopers are never recognized for the hours of training and work to protect everyone in the State and also travelling through.
Mr. & Mrs. Kirby are at home now and we are truly blessed to have them still around after this tragic accident.
Please recognize Trooper Roderick for a job well performed, also the DOTD Officer in the weigh Station that witnessed this accident at approx 3:38am on Friday August 27, 2010.
