My wife and I have recently returned from a visit to Florida, during which we were involved in a minor road accident in Kendall, Miami, whilst driving an AVIS hire car. We were initially concerned by the length of time it took to get a telephone response from the FHP, ( we called 911 and were told our call would be transferred to the Florida Highway Patrol, but received 'call waiting' messages for more than half an hour, and had still not received a reply when the battery of the cell 'phone we were using died). However contact was eventually made, and Trooper Nadal attended, although he did not arrive until almost two hours after the accident. (not his fault).
He dealt with the situation in a most competent, efficient and reassuring manner, which we appreciated as:-
- we are British Nationals, living on the small Caribbean Island of St Lucia, on only our third visit to America
- the other driver was a Cuban Citizen who spoke no English,
- this was the first encounter we had had with any American Police Force and were unsure of what to expect.
- we were worried we might be held responsible for the damage to our hire car
Trooper Nadal assured us that as the blame for the accident lay entirely with the other driver there nothing for us to worry about and provided a report which was accepted by AVIS.
We would like to thank him for his courtesy and reassurance, and to commend him for his efficiency, which reflects favourably on the Florida Highway Patrol. We wish him success in his future career.
