Sonny Blum

Auxiliary Trooper Harold O. Sonny Blum recently retired from the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary after serving for thirty seven years and three months. He was a member of the Pensacola unit where he served in every capacity of the unit, including its commander. Sonny spent many hours patrolling with the troopers in the Pensacola district as part of the limited scope patrol. He was always available anytime he was needed for a ride along, special detail, or during the many hurricanes and other natural disasters that affected the Pensacola area over the years.

During his time with the Auxiliary, Sonny was recognized several times for his service. In 1994, he was selected as Auxiliary Trooper of the Year for his part in the capture of two armed robbery suspects that had just robbed a pawn shop.

Again in 1996, Sonny was recognized along with Cpl. J.A. Freeman as Trooper of the Year for his rescue of two teenage boys from drowning in the Gulf of Mexico. Not only was he recognized as Trooper of the Year, but he also received the Medal of Valor for his actions on that day. Sonny was the first Auxiliary trooper to ever receive Trooper of the Year and the Medal of Valor from FHP.

Auxiliary Trooper Sonny Blum dedicated more than 37 years of service to the Florida Highway Patrol and the people of Florida, serving with distinction and great honor. The troopers of the Pensacola District share special gratitude to Sonny for the many hours he helped keep them safe while on patrol. Congratulations, FHPA Trooper Sonny Blum, and thank you for a job well done!
