Children five years old and older can now get state-issued Florida identification cards. Previously, children had to be 12 or older. However, that has changed with a new law that went into effect October 1, 2006. The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ Divisions of Driver Licenses and Florida Highway Patrol kicked off a new initiative this week to encourage parents to get their younger children state-issued identification cards. At the event held in Miami this past week, about 200 children as young as five years old lined up to get their pictures taken for their first Florida I.D.card. "This will allow authorities to perform speedy searches for missing children," said FHP Public Affairs Officer Lt. Pat Santangelo. Parents can take their children to any Driver License Office to obtain an identification card for their child. The cost is only $3.00.
