Memorial Marker Unveiled
Memorial Marker Unveiled

On Monday, October 2, 2006, Trooper Darryl Haywood, Sr., was remembered during a memorial marker dedication ceremony held on the side of the roadway on Interstate 4 in Volusia County where he died in the line of duty exactly two years ago. Trooper Haywood was a 4-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol, joining the FHP after retiring from the New York City Police Department where he served for twenty years. During his career at the Patrol, Trooper Haywood received numerous commendations for his outstanding performance and professionalism. In 2004, Darryl was selected as the statewide Florida Highway Patrol Trooper of the Month for July for his life-saving actions in pulling a motorist from a burning vehicle.

During the memorial ceremony, Trooper Haywood was recognized for his commitment, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice in service to the citizens of Florida. Colonel Chris Knight and other members of the FHP were privileged to take part in this memorial marker dedication to honor Trooper Darryl Haywood, Sr. The event was an appropriate tribute to a man who dedicated his life to his faith, family, and his community. It is hoped that in addition to honoring Trooper Haywood with this special memorial marker, the recognition continues to bring honor to his wife Linda, his children Darryl, Jr., and Erica, granddaughter Chloe, his mother Louise Haywood, and the rest of his family and colleagues.
