FHP help along evacuation route.

The Ft. Myers District hosted a mock contraflow exercise for imaginary Hurricane Sharon that would hit the west coast of Florida as a category 3 storm. The main goal of the exercise was for agencies involved to perform a contraflow plan (one way traffic) of Interstate 75 across South Florida. The plan, if used, would divert traffic one way across what is commonly known as Alligator Alley to the Ft. Lauderdale area. This would assist in the evacuation of South Florida if the Governor ever deemed it necessary.

The driving community needs to know about the possibilities of using the contraflow plan and that our partnerships with Troop L (Davie), the Department of Transportation, and other asset management teams are crucial in its implementation.

FHP encourages the motoring public to be prepared during hurricane season. Motorists need to have an evacuation plan in place. Remember it is FHP's goal to help provide a safe driving environment, especially during a hurricane.
