On Friday, July 14, 2006, Governor Jeb Bush was at the Florida Highway Patrol Regional Communications Center in Miami to announce the completion of the statewide law enforcement radio system. The system is a product of a partnership between the state and M/A-COM, a unit of Tyco Industries. This radio system enables law enforcement officials to communicate easily throughout Florida during disasters and other emergencies. The statewide system will enable more than 6,500 officials from 17 state agencies to communicate seamlessly throughout 59,000 square miles of Florida and up to 25 miles offshore.

On Tuesday, June 13th, 2006, the Miami Regional Communications Center completed a transition that our communications personnel have been waiting on for quite some time. Since the grand opening of Department of Transportation’s SunGuide Control Center in 2004, the space for the communications center has sat empty, waiting for the transition to the M/A-Com radio system to the South Florida region. The relocation brought additional members within the Miami Regional Communications Center. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) joined our center participating in the statewide co-location project.

The center itself has 18 consoles, on three separate levels, much like theatre seating. There is a view of the video wall from virtually each position. A glass office houses two additional work stations for the on duty shift commander and duty officer supervisor. With this new center came a great deal of new equipment and gadgets for our personnel, including a new phone system, new printers, cordless headsets, and new furnishings, all of which were badly needed. All of these valuable tools will better aid the Patrol's communications personnel in doing the important job they do everyday.
