Troop B of the Florida Highway Patrol was recently invited to attend a Wal-Mart Safety event in Gainesville. Lt. Mike Burroughs called upon the FHP Auxiliary unit to assist in educating motorists about seat belt safety, especially since Memorial Day was soon approaching. The FHP Seat Belt Convincer was utilized to show the importance of wearing a seat belt while operating a motor vehicle. The FHP Seat Belt Convincer simulates a 10-12 miles per hour crash while wearing a seat belt.

To enhance the display, a 150-pound dummy is placed in the FHP Seat Belt Convincer and given two rides during the presentation. On the first ride, the dummy is buckled securely within the seat with a baby doll placed in his lap in the same seat belt. This demonstration simulates the hazards of placing a child in your lap with or without a seat belt. FHPA Trooper Kaskey then launches the Convincer Seat down the sled while FHPA Trooper Rick Brown narrates the events that are transpiring during the simulated crash. The crowd gasps as it sees the weight of the adult dummy crushing the baby doll during the simulated crash.

Next, FHPA Troopers Adam Kaskey and Rick Brown create the scenario with the adult dummy and the baby doll without a seat belt. The crowd was amazed to see the force and momentum displayed as a result of only an 8-10 miles per hour crash. Onlookers were surprised at how quickly the baby doll and the dummy were ejected forward into the compartment of the Seat Belt Convincer and the weight of the dummy crushed the doll.
