Corporal Sumner.
Corporal Phil Sumner
Troop B.

Florida Highway Patrol Corporal Phil Sumner recently had the unlikely duty of helping to deliver a Georgia woman's baby at an Interstate 75 rest stop. A visiting motorist in the rest area approached Cpl. Sumner and told him that a woman was in labor and lying adjacent to her vehicle in the parking lot of the I-75 southbound Florida Welcome Center. Corporal Sumner quickly went over to the woman and instructed FHP dispatch to summon a Hamilton County Ambulance, but the woman told Cpl. Sumner that she couldn’t wait for an ambulance. The baby was on its way! Cpl. Sumner then helped with the delivery of a baby boy in the parking lot – a first for Sumner, a 16-year veteran of the FHP. The baby boy and mother were transported to South Georgia Medical Center in good health. The baby's father is serving in the U.S. Army.
