Sergeant Nicholas G. Sottile

It is with deep regret that the Florida Highway Patrol announces the untimely death of Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Nicholas G. Sottile. Sergeant Sottile was killed in the line of duty on Friday, January 12, 2007, while conducting a traffic stop on US-27 in Highlands County. He was fired upon by unknown assailants who remained at large throughout the night. After a massive search by law enforcement officers representing 25 state, federal, and local law enforcement agencies, both suspects were apprehended early Saturday morning in Highlands County.

Sergeant Sottile was airlifted to Florida Hospital in Lake Placid, where he later expired from his injuries.

Sergeant Sottile, a 24-year veteran of the FHP, was assigned to Troop F – Arcadia. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and two children, Nicholas and Heather. Sergeant Sottile’s son, Nicholas, is also a member of the Patrol. Trooper Sottile is assigned to Troop C – Tampa.

Sergeant Sottile becomes the 41st trooper who has been killed in the line of duty since 1939.

Viewing will take place at the Memorial United Methodist Church on Monday, January 15, 2007, from 6 PM until 8PM. The physical address of the Church is 500 Kent Avenue, Lake Placid, Florida 33852.
