Recently, the Florida Highway Patrol, the Orange County Community Traffic Safety Team, and the National Federation of the Blind-Greater Orlando Chapter, came together to observe White Cane and Guide Dog Safety Day. This special day is set aside each year to make the public aware of the laws regulating special accommodations and traffic laws for blind and visually-impaired pedestrians and sighted drivers. The group met at two intersections in Orlando where blind and visually-impaired people demonstrated to the public how they effectively and competently cross a busy intersection with the use of their skills, guide dogs and/or white canes. Troopers and other law enforcement officers stopped drivers who violated the pedestrian’s right of way while attempting to cross the roadway. Drivers must stop for blind and visually-impaired pedestrians carrying a white cane or accompanied by a guide dog. "It's The Law" in all 50 States!
