LTC Thompson

Florida Highway Patrol Director, Col. David Brierton promoted Troy Thompson as the new Lt. Colonel for the two troops of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE), effective Sept. 20, 2013. Lieutenant Colonel Thompson was selected from an impressive group of candidates who were interviewed for this important leadership position within our agency. Thompson will oversee the operations of Troops I and J and brings a great deal of experience and knowledge to his new position. Under the oversight of the new Lieutenant Colonel, CVE will continue to focus on its core mission to enforce laws related to commercial motor vehicles within our state.

Thompson is a 19-year veteran of law enforcement who has most recently served as the Troop J Captain in Fort Myers. Thompson began his career with the Florida Department of Transportation’s Office of Motor Carrier Compliance assigned to the Miami District in October 1993. He then promoted to the rank of sergeant and was assigned to the Tampa District in December 1998. Thompson promoted to the rank of lieutenant assigned to the Tampa District in February 2001 and then promoted to the rank of captain supervising the Tampa and Fort Myers Districts in August 2002. From July 2010 to July 2011, Thompson also handled the additional district responsibilities assigned to the Compliance Investigations District Commander. Since July 2011, Thompson has served as the CVE District Commander in Fort Myers with the Florida Highway Patrol.

During his career, Thompson has served in many roles including hazardous materials specialist, field trainer, first-line supervisor, and commander. In each of these roles, Thompson developed his knowledge and skills by volunteering for additional duties such as training, coordinating outreach events and participating in specialized committees. In 2010, Thompson was awarded with the Department of Transportation’s Engineering & Operations Leadership Award for his leadership achievements. In 2011, he was named to the Florida Trucking Association’s Hall of Fame for his outreach efforts with the industry. Most recently, Thompson was elected to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Executive Committee as the Region II Vice-President representing the southeastern states.

Thompson holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of South Florida and is also a graduate of the 2008 Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy, Class 234.

Congratulations Lieutenant Colonel Troy Thompson on your promotion.
