Ready for more

On Dec. 2, 2012, 47 individuals arrived at the Florida Highway Patrol Academy in Havana, Florida to begin their journey to become State Troopers. At 2:00 pm the Academy Staff welcomed the new recruits in a manner designed to let them know they were entering a career that would change their lives. Little did the recruits know they were about to become a part of the first accelerated recruit class designed to get them trained and out on the road as Troopers in 23 weeks, cutting 5 weeks from their time at the Academy. They would work 11 hour days Monday through Thursday and 8 hours on Friday with physical training every morning. Of the 47 individuals who started the journey, 44 endured the rigors of the Academy and the demanding schedule.

Throughout their time at the Academy, the recruits participated in events designed to orient them to a life of public service and support of the communities they serve. They had the opportunity to visit Pyramid as part of their law enforcement training in dealing with the mentally disabled. The recruits participated in Southeastern Community Blood drives. They also ran in the Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run in April, 2013. Several recruits also participated in the Red Shoe Run in April, 2013 which benefited the Ronald McDonald House of Tallahassee.

On March 25, 2013, 16 certified recruits joined the 124th Recruit Class, bringing the total number of recruits to 59. The prior certified recruits decided to join the Florida Highway Patrol from other basic recruit academies as well as from other agencies which include the Tampa Police Department, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Baker County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the Miccosukee Police Department to name a few.

On May 9, 2013, the members of the 124th Recruit Class graduated from the FHP Academy. They join the more than 1,800 Florida Troopers who have dedicated their lives to the mission of making Florida safer for our residents and those who visit this wonderful State.
