A Pyramid staff member addresses the recruits

Recently, the 42 members of the 121st Recruit Class of the Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy visited Pyramid Inc. in Tallahassee. Pyramid Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping adults who have mental disabilities. Students who attend Pyramid receive instruction in the fine and performing arts, as well as vocational and life-management skills.

The recruits were grateful for the opportunity to visit Pyramid as part of their law enforcement training in handling situations involving people with mental disabilities. The real-life interactions help prepare recruits for potential encounters with different segments of the population after graduation from the academy. By building positive relationships with persons with mental disabilities while in recruit training, troopers become better equipped to interact with them in the future.

the recruits enjoy some arts and craftsWhile at Pyramid, recruits participated with the students in arts and crafts projects and were able to view some of their performing arts productions. They also learned about the various kinds of training and therapy the facility provides.

In turn, the members of the 121st Recruit Class put on a performance of their own, conducting marching drills and calling cadence for the Pyramid students. They even did some pushups to give Pyramid students an idea of what their academy training is like.

Recruits do pushupsIn addition to growing their relationship with Pyramid, the 121st Recruit Class also recently participated in a blood drive at the FHP Academy. It has long been a tradition that FHP recruits help out in different ways while they attend the academy, and nearly every recruit class has been a part at least one blood drive.

The Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy values the relationship it has established with the staff and students at Pyramid Inc., as well as the Southeastern Community Blood Drive. The recruit class looks forward to more volunteer opportunities in the future as recruits learn the importance of leading by example in their communities and the value of community service.
