Brannan started his career in February 1984 as a member of the 70th recruit class. The Patrol assigned him to Troop E in Miami. Brannan earned promotion to corporal in 1987 and to sergeant in 1988. He remained in Miami until 1990 when he transferred to Polk County. He has supervised road troopers and contraband interdiction troopers, and he currently supervises a traffic homicide squad in Polk County. Brannan has served as a sergeant for 23 years. He achieved the honorary designation by having the most years of service in the rank of sergeant.
