On March 31, 2011, the members of the 120th Recruit Class of the Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy participated in Florida’s 28th Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics. The recruits ran with members of the Florida Department of Corrections, Tallahassee Police Department, Leon County Sherriff’s Office, Florida Department of Transportation and many other members from both local and state law enforcement agencies.

The Torch Run began in 1981 in Wichita, Kansas, and is the largest single grass roots effort to raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics and their athletes. In Florida, more than 5,000 law enforcement officers from more than 300 agencies participate each year. The torch relay works its way over 1,500 miles through 60 counties in Florida.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott joined the 120th Recruit class and FHP Academy staff members during the run. The 1.5-mile trek ended in the courtyard of the Florida State Capitol, where Attorney General Pam Bondi hosted a ceremony to kick off the statewide relay.
