With the help of Florida Highway Patrol troopers and the Florida Department of Children & Families, a father was recently reunited with his 5-year old son who he had not seen in over a year and a half. It started when a 29-year old father received a tip that his son was in Central Florida. A custody arrangement gave both the mother and father joint custody of their son. The father told troopers that in April 2009, his son and mother of the child disappeared from their home in New York. Over the weekend, the father drove from New York and attempted to find his son. He was able to locate the vehicle his son was in and called police in Polk County. The call was transferred to Troop D dispatch.

Duty Officer Bobbie Jean McGahan took the call and kept the father calm as troopers were dispatched to the area. They located and followed both vehicles until Trooper Alfredo Ferri initiated a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle and Trooper Richard Crenshaw and Trooper Thomas Pikul arrived to assist. DCF was called to the scene to help troopers determine who had legal custody of the child. The mother was arrested for an active warrant out of New York in reference to parole violations and interfering with custody. She was booked into the Orange County jail. The 5-year old boy was returned to his father.
