The Florida Highway Patrol honored a long-standing volunteer in March 2010 during a retirement party for FHP Auxiliary Capt. James Porter. Porter retired from the FHPA after serving for 12 years in Troop L, which covers southeast Florida.. Porter first retired from the U.S. Army as a Sergeant Major in 1976 after serving his country for 27 years. Before he entered the Army, Porter had a desire to become an Indiana State Trooper, so in 1997 he decided to make his longstanding dream come true when become a member of the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary. Porter quickly became a vital member of the FHP family as he dedicated countless duty hours toward service and protection of those residing and visiting Florida.

Through the years, Captain Porter received numerous letters of commendation for protecting dignitaries, community service and more. In addition to his outstanding work ethic, Porter enjoyed working with troopers and Florida’s families to ensure child safety seats were properly installed. At his retirement party, Troop L’s Commander, Maj. Luis Ramil, noted it best, “FHPA Captain Porter represented the Florida Highway Patrol with the upmost professionalism, and he always had a friendly spirit that everyone enjoyed to be around.”

The Patrol will truly miss Jim’s whistle and warm welcome each day.
