Lieutenant Bill Leeper at the Putnam County workshop
Lieutenant Bill Leeper at the Putnam County workshop, talks about emergency contact information.

A team comprised of several state agencies recently received a Federal grant from the National Center for Senior Transportation to help make it easier for older Floridians to access much needed services in their community. The state agencies who have partnered together on this project include: the Department of Transportation, Department of Elder Affairs, Department of Health, Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles, Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged, and the Florida Highway Patrol. The Team is developing a new statewide program called United We Guide and is implementing an action plan. The project is focused on training a Mobility Manager in two pilot counties to assist elders with services, keep them independent and provide them access to more transportation options.

Selma Sauls talks to the St. Johns County group about the Silver Alert program and what elders can expect as they age.

The Florida Team selected Putnam and St. Johns Counties due to their exceptional dedication to senior services and the broad base of organizations that are active in their community. The Mobility Manager will partner with the Florida Team to create a one-call program that will provide comprehensive connectivity to mobility services and safety information to enhance the quality of life for older Floridians. The Florida Team held workshops in St. Johns and Putnam Counties to educate all of the local agencies about the innovative United We Guide program and how it will benefit and be tailored to fit their community. The planned start date is July 1, 2009. A final report of the results of the project will be sent to the National Center for Senior Transportation by September 30, 2009. Lt. Bill Leeper is representing FHP and Selma Sauls is representing HSMV.
