  1. All applicants will be evaluated through the normal selection vetting process.

  2. Once the applicant has successfully completed the Application review, Basic Abilities Test, Physical Abilities Test, Criminal History, Polygraph, medical screening, and Psychological screening, a background conditional employment offer will be made to him/her.

  3. The applicant will sign a Background Condition of Employment Acknowledgement form confirming his/her knowledge that continued employment is contingent upon the successfulness of the background investigation. If the background investigation is unacceptable, the member will be terminated.

  4. Certified Florida officers with at least one year of sworn service: Upon completion of the Background Condition of Employment Acknowledgement form, if the applicant is a certified Florida officer with at least one year of sworn service, he/she will be placed in the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program in his/her assigned troop. Prior to the certified member beginning the FTO program, he/she will receive training in the FHP high-liability areas (this lesson plan has been developed by the FHP Academy for dissemination to troop FTOs/trainers). When the FHP Academy’s current recruit class schedule reaches the point of FHP specific training, the FTO program (if not completed) will be suspended for the newly hired certified member so that he/she may attend the FHP specific training at the FHP Academy. The FTO program will resume upon the newly hired certified members’ graduation from the FHP Academy.

  5. Certified Florida officers with no or less than one year of sworn service: Upon completion of the Background Condition of Employment Acknowledgement form, if the applicant is not a certified Florida officer with at least one year of sworn service, he/she will be offered employment in his/her local area as an FHP Trainee. If employment is accepted, the trainee will serve in a capacity designated by the troop commander, e.g., duty officer, crash records technician, call taker, etc. Subsequently, the trainee will report to the FHP Academy for the next scheduled FHP specific training course class.

  6. Applicants who are not Florida certified: Upon completion of the Background Condition of Employment Acknowledgement form, if the applicant is not a certified Florida officer, he/she will be offered employment in his/her local area as an FHP Trainee. If employment is accepted, the trainee will serve in a capacity designated by the troop commander, e.g., duty officer, crash records technician, call taker, etc. Subsequently, the trainee will report to the FHP Academy for the next scheduled basic recruit class.

  7. Troop commanders will be tasked with continually identifying troopers in the FHP reserve program and those that have retired who are interested in the short transition process to full-time employment.
