On September 29, 2008, Cub Scout Pack #137 met at Blountstown First Baptist Church to learn what to do in an emergency, how to stay safe, and to always “Say No” to drugs. Cubmaster Nona Borellim and Assistant Cubmaster Trooper Philip Spaziante welcomed state and county law enforcement officers to the weekly meeting so the Scouts could fulfill their Emergency Preparedness requirements.

Florida Highway Patrol Troopers Larry Battles, Ron Cox, James Swearingin and David Cox were special guests at the Pack meeting, talking to the boys about traffic safety and showing the Scouts the equipment they use while they are on patrol. The Florida Highway Patrol brought one of its popular roll over simulators to demonstrate why it is so important to use seat belts. The simulator spins around with a dummy inside, but when the dummy is unbelted in the simulator, it is ejected out the window. This action shows kids what happens to a person if they are involved in a roll over crash and don’t wear their seat belt.

Deputy Sheriff Eddie Dalton was at the meeting to teach the Scouts about the dangers of illegal drugs. Deputy Dalton, K-9 handler for the Calhoun County Sherriff’s Office, and his K-9 partner Gina demonstrated how police dogs sniff out dangerous drugs so officers can arrest drug dealers and other criminals.

Cub Scout Pack #137 is grateful to the members of the Florida Highway Patrol, Sheriff's Offices, and Police Departments who are dedicated to public service and work hard each day and night to keep all of us safe. To all of them from the Boy Scouts of America, "Thank you and keep up the good work!"
