A couple months ago, the Florida Commercial Vehicle & Cargo Theft Task Force, which includes agencies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, the Metro Dade Police Department, and the Florida Highway Patrol Bureau of Investigations, located a chop shop in Dade County. To pinpoint the location of the illegal activity, the Task Force conducted surveillance on two dump trucks that had been stolen out of Brevard County and abandoned in St. Lucie County. In the end, the Task Force was able to arrest two suspects and charge them with Grand Theft over $100,000 and for Operation of a Chop Shop.
Overall, the Task Force was able to recover four dump trucks, valued at $400,000; one Ford F-350 truck worth $30,000; a Ford diesel engine valued at $10,000; a Ford truck bed worth $5,000; and other stolen vehicle parts, valued at $10,000 – a total of $455,000 worth of stolen property. In addition, all of the equipment that had been used in the operation of the illegal chop ship was seized with an approximate value of another $30,000.
