Recently, Lt. William B. Tierney was operating Laser on Interstate 10 eastbound, north of Lake City, when he clocked a grey vehicle at 89 mph in a 70 mph zone. Lt. Tierney attempted to overtake the vehicle, when the driver slammed on her brakes, causing Lt. Tierney to take evasive action. The patrol vehicle swerved to the right, then ran off onto the southbound shoulder where the front struck a large tree.

The suspects vehicle continued eastbound on State Road 8, then u-turned in the median and drove west on State Road 8to Interstate 75. Lt. Tierney was able to give the Jacksonville Regional Communication Center dispatch a vehicle description and partial tag. This information was given to all the Lake City district troopers as well as city and county agencies. Later the tag number was found on Lt. Tierney's MDT which confirmed the tag number he had given earlier.

Lt. Mike Burroughs spotted the vehicle on State Road 93 (I-75). He had used the MDT Laptop in his patrol car to pull up a similar type of vehicle on the internet to help him identify the correct vehicle. Lt. Burroughs was able to stop the vehicle and take the driver into custody without incident. The suspect later confessed to the entire event and was charged with the following:

  1. Aggravated Assault with a motor vehicle
  2. Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding
  3. Leaving the Scene with Injuries
