September 24th, 2005 was a day that retired Sergeant Wendell "Bruce" Dailey will remember for a long time. For the first time in many years, Bruce watched a University of Miami football game from a different vantage point than he was used to … in the stands with his granddaughter Jamie and all the other UM fans. After the game he was invited into the locker room, where he had been many times before in a different capacity, but this time was different. UM Head Coach Larry Coker surprised Bruce by awarding him the game ball after the UM Hurricanes defeated the Colorado Buffalos 23-3.

In 2004, Sergeant Wendell “Bruce” Dailey retired after more than twenty years with the Florida Highway Patrol. Since 1980, Sgt. Dailey has been the familiar face on the field with University of Miami Football head coaches Howard Schnellenberger, Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson, Butch Davis and Larry Coker. After his retirement Bruce became a reserve trooper and continued with UM for one more year doing as he had since 1980, escorting the team to both home and away games.

The University of Miami has always considered Sgt. Dailey a member of the team staff with his five National and numerous Big East Championship rings to show for his years of dedication. When asked about his favorite trip, moment, or story from his 25 years escorting the team he simply replied “All of it … it was all good” as he smiled nostalgically and thought of the great times.
