Trooper Jim Johnson
Traffic stops may appear to be a routine task for our troopers, but one recent stop in Pasco County demonstrates that looking beyond the stop can lead to far more than a traffic citation.
While conducting speed enforcement on a deadly stretch of US 19, Land-O-Lakes District Trooper Jim Johnson made a traffic stop on the driver of a van who was traveling 22 MPH over the speed limit. During the stop, Trooper Johnson detected a strong odor of marijuana, which lead to his search of the vehicle. Trooper Johnson not only located the source of the marijuana smell, but a large amount of cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, LSD, Vicodin, Valium, Xanax, Morphine, and over $4,500 in cash.
The drugs were taken off the street and the cash was seized by the FHP. Twenty-five criminal charges later, a career criminal and drug dealer is behind bars - all because a trooper followed his nose, looked past the traffic stop, and remembered that nothing is routine on Florida's highways!
