A few weeks ago, Troop A participated in a traffic safety event sponsored by the Escambia County EMS designed to educate teen drivers about the dangers of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). The event, a mock fatal DUI crash, was held at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola for local high school students. For the estimated 1,000 who witnessed the realistic reenactment, it proved to be a “sobering experience." Lt. Steve Preston and Trooper Tabbatha Glazebrook simulated a crash scene investigation and DUI arrest, which included conducting sobriety tests. FHP was joined by other local agencies, including Life Flight, who all worked together to create a live-action mock crash for the teen audience.

Later the same week, Troop A took part in another community safety event. Lt. Preston and Trooper Jim Bass traveled to Chipola Junior College for a special Day Of Safety held for nearly 1,000 local school children in the Marianna area. The Rollover Simulator--always a big hit with kids--was used to demonstrate the importance of wearing a seatbelt. Dozens of community agencies turned out to talk with the children on a variety of safety issues from the dangers of electrical shock in the home to the importance of wearing bicycle helmets.
