On July 1, 2005, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles held a press conference at the Neil Kirkman building to promote its statewide Motorcycle Rider Public Information and Education Campaign, “RIDE LEGAL. RIDE SMART.” At the event, a new billboard promoting this campaign was unveiled.
The motorcycle safety campaign, funded by a Department of Transportation grant, will include public information on motorcycle safety through public service announcements, billboards, posters, and motorcycle and community events. The program encourages riders to not ride while impaired, to wear protective gear when riding, to be aware of their surroundings, and to promote the need for licensing and endorsements.
Florida Highway Patrol Major Ernesto Duarte and Division of Driver Licenses Director Sandy Lambert spoke to the press about the campaign and the importance of safety on Florida's roads. Major Duarte also addressed the media about being safe over the highly traveled July 4th weekend, and the state's new seat belt laws.
