The 8th Annual Southeastern Colonel's Conference and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Southern Region meeting were held May 15-17 in Tallahassee. The three-day event, which was hosted by the Florida Highway Patrol and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), kicked off with a golf tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Southwood Golf Club, followed by a Welcome Host Reception, provided for all the conference attendees.

On Monday, following a welcome speech by Colonel Chris Knight, a conference call was held during which Dr. Jeffrey Runge, NHTSA Administrator, called in from Washington, D.C., to thank Florida for hosting the conference and to urge agencies to do all they can to increase the seatbelt usage rate, especially in the Southeast.

Following the guest speaker’s opening remarks, representatives from all over the Southeastern United States shared ideas and highlighted various successful projects and initiatives from their respective agencies. The conference afforded top members from several different agencies to listen to presentations and learn what other states are doing in traffic safety and enforcement.

The IACP meeting was held on the last day of the conference to discuss regional enforcement programs. During the special meeting Secretary of Transportation Norman Minetta addressed the representatives, thanking them for their hard work and dedication and expressing DOT’s commitment to working with law enforcement on important public safety issues. Mr. Minetta reiterated the goals expressed by President Bush that all agencies must do everything in their power to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities on our roadways across the nation.
