F/Sgt. Mike Edenfield Retired F/Sgt. Mike Edenfield
F/Sgt. Mike Edenfield
July 6, 1922 - October 28, 2004

The Florida Highway Patrol said goodbye to an old friend on October 28, 2004, when Retired First Sergeant Mike Edenfield passed away in Lakeland after a long battle with kidney disease.

Born in Lake Butler, Florida, on July 6, 1922, Mike Edenfield was destined for public service. He served our country as a First Sergeant in the United States Navy during World War II. After an Honorable Discharge in 1943, F/Sgt. Edenfield joined the Florida Highway Patrol as a member of the 4th Recruit Class. Upon graduation, Patrolman Edenfield reported for duty in Miami and remained there for seventeen months before coming home to Troop C where he spent the next 37 years patrolling in the Brooksville, Lakeland, and Tampa districts. While at Troop C, Mike promoted to Corporal, then to Sergeant, and finally to First Sergeant. He retired as one of the last First Sergeants in 1982. After his retirement, Mike remained in Polk County with Lillian, his wife of 56 years.

In addition to his work with the Patrol and his devotion to his family, Mike was actively involved in his community. He was a member of the music ministry Voice Triumph; a member of the First United Methodist Church; and a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge #345. After his retirement, Mike stayed in touch with other FHP retirees in the area, meeting with them monthly over coffee to share stories about the early days on the Patrol. Many of the Lakeland District Troopers would make it a point to attend the Edenfield's annual Christmas party to listen to the war stories that all troopers love to tell. The men and women of the Florida Highway Patrol who knew First Sergeant Mike Edenfield will fondly remember him for his many years of dedication.
