Trooper Carrico
Trooper Kelly D. Carrico
Troop A (Crestview)

While on patrol in Destin, Florida, Trooper Kelly Carrico responded to a "man down, possible drowning" call dispatched on his county sheriff's radio. Since he was in the immediate area, he responded to the call, arriving on the scene within minutes prior to the EMS team. At the scene, Trooper Carrico found an Okaloosa Sheriff's deputy in the water attempting to rescue an unconscious and bleeding male victim. He immediately retrieved his first responder kit, entered the water, and began administering CPR on the injured subject.

Trooper Carrico continued life saving efforts with the help of the deputy. Okaloosa EMS arrived shortly and took over rescue efforts. The subject was transported to Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center where, unfortunately, he was pronounced dead. The victim, 20, had apparently been swimming with co-workers under the Destin bridge when he decided to dive into the shallow water. An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death.
