Trooper Paul Tompkins
On January 6, 2003, Trooper Paul Tompkins stopped a vehicle for unlawful speed (83 mph in a 55 mph zone) on Interstate 95 at 8th Street in Duval County. After the speeding citation was issued, Trooper Tompkins requested, and was given, consent to search the vehicle by the driver, Corey Roderick Fountain. The search of the vehicle revealed a baggie of suspected marijuana, approximately 2.5 ounces. Trooper Tompkins attempted to arrest Fountain at which time he fled on foot. Fountain took the marijuana from the vehicle, and while fleeing, dumped the drugs onto the ground. With the help of 2 Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officers, Fountain was caught and arrested. During the search of Fountain, Trooper Tompkins found a knife and $2,244 in cash. Fountain was transported to the JSO narcotics office and interviewed. He signed a written statement stating that the money was obtained from selling drugs. The cash was seized for forfeiture by Trooper Tompkins.
