On December 6, 2002, Trooper Raymond Pastrana stopped a vehicle on Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County for unlawful speed. Upon conducting the stop, Trooper Pastrana detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Troopers Jeffrey Perkins and William Tindle were called to assist with the stop. A search of the vehicle revealed 10 pounds of marijuana and $1,000 in cash.
During the subsequent investigation, it was determined that the driver of the vehicle had more narcotics and cash at his residence in Gainesville. Consent to search the residence was granted and executed, turning up an additional 4½ pounds of marijuana and approximately $7,000 in U.S. currency. The marijuana, with a street value of $65,500, a total of $8,000 in cash, and a 1995 Mazda were all seized pending forfeiture.
