Sergeant James D. Johnson
On December 27, 2002, two armed men robbed the People’s Community Bank in Malone, Florida. A BOLO (be on the lookout) was broadcast describing the suspects and their vehicle. While Sgt. James D. Johnson was conducting surveillance at the suspects’ residence, he spotted the suspects driving by in their vehicle. Sgt. Johnson immediately attempted a felony traffic stop with the assistance of a city police officer and FDLE agent. The suspects fled. Sgt. Johnson initiated a pursuit, during which time one of the suspects fired several gunshots at him out of the window.
Despite great personal danger, Sgt. Johnson continued to pursue the suspects until they crashed their vehicle. One of the suspects shot two more rounds at Sgt. Johnson, but suddenly turned the gun on himself before Sgt. Johnson could return any fire. The other suspect surrendered, and was placed under arrest.
