January 13-24, 2003 found the Florida Highway Patrol hosting the Basic SWAT Class #5. This training was held in West Palm Beach and organized by Captain Bradford A. Pelton, District Commander for Troop L. This was the first SWAT class held in the field, away from the FHP Training Academy. The purpose was to determine cost effectiveness and promote better working relationships with officers from other police agencies.

In attendance during the 80+ hours of training, were twenty-nine law enforcement officers from eight Departments, including the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Boca Raton Police Department, Delray Beach Police Department, Greenacres Police Department, Manalapan Police Department, Palm Beach Police Department, and the West Palm Beach Police Department. Instructors from the Florida Highway Patrol, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, West Palm Beach Police Department and Florida Department of Law Enforcement provided instructions for the class.

During the two-week school, courses in Tactical Handgun Techniques, Tactical Shotgun, Assault Rifle AR-15, Sub-Machine Gun MP-5, Long Rifle M-14, Basic Hostage Negotiations, Explosive Devices and Booby Traps, Chemical Agents, Diversionary Devices, Building Search, Armored Trucks Deployment, and Defensive Tactics were taught. An extensive physical fitness regimen was also included.

SWAT Class

The first field Basic SWAT Training Class was a success and certificates of completion were given to the members upon graduation.
