Spring Breakers traveling to Florida’s Northwest beaches should heed this warning: Strike Force 98 is in full operation mode for Spring Break 2003! Law enforcement officers from 39 separate law enforcement agencies across the region are participating in Strike Force 98’s fifth operation, which began on February 28th. The multi-agency operation will provide strict traffic enforcement on U.S. Highway 98, the Panhandle’s main coastal highway-its most dangerous stretch-as well as all roads that lead to U.S. 98. Law enforcement officers will be looking for motorists who break traffic laws on these roadways.
In just two years, nearly 400 people died on Northwest Florida roadways, with one fourth of those fatalities occurring on U.S. 98. To prevent further traffic-related injuries and fatalities on this stretch of highway, Strike Force 98 will continue to emphasize enforcement of Florida’s DUI, speeding, aggressive driving, and occupant protection laws. The number of tickets issued will most likely go up, but hopefully the numbers of serious injuries and fatalities will go down. Hopefully, the motoring public will get the message not to drink and drive, to obey posted speed limits, to wear seat belts and utilize child restraint devices, and to drive responsibly.
